Ramones are often cited as the very first punk rock group. Ramones was an American band formed in 1974 in New York City’s Forest Hills neighborhood, Queens. Four of the original members of the group attended Forest Hill High School. The band members adopted pseudonyms ending with the surname ‘Ramone’ and included Dee Dee, Joey, Johnny, Tommy, Marky, C.J, Elvis and Richie Ramone. None of the members of the group were however related.
The group had a great influence on the movement of punk rock all across the world though they never enjoyed great commercial success. There music was greatly influenced by pop music from the 1950s and 60s which the members of the band grew up listening to.
Ramones toured for 22 years without a break performing in 2263 concerts before they eventually broke up. The group recorded 14 studio albums and performed in numerous tours. Their final studio album ‘Adios Amigos!’ was released in 1995. The band finally performed their farewell concert in 1996 at the Palace in Hollywood after being on tour with the Lollapalooza music festival.
The compilation Ramones Mania was the only album that ever made it gold in the United States. Spin Magazine ranked Ramones as the 2nd greatest band after the Beatles in 2002. In the same year, the Ramones were finally inducted into the Hall of Fame of Rock and Roll together with three of the bands founders. The band has continued to gain recognition over the years and in 2011 Ramones received a Lifetime Achievement Award in the Grammys.
The documentary ‘End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones’ was released in 2004. The group’s music has had a huge influence on pop and punk music over the years and many artists have cited gaining great influence from the band. Some punk bands such as ‘Screeching Weasel’ and ‘The Vindictives’ have already recorded cover versions of all Ramones albums.
