An American band from Arlington, Texas, Pantera was formed in 1981 by Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darell, the Abbot Brothers. The other members Terry Glaze (vocals) and Rex Brown (bassist) joined the group the following year. Vinnie played drums while Darell played guitar. On 1987 Phil Anselmo replaced Terry Glaze on vocals as the grouped looked to incorporate a heavier sound. The group’s main genres included groove metal, thrash metal, heavy metal and glam metal.
With over 20 million albums sold worldwide, Pantera were a band that influenced the metal core and nu metal industry greatly. The group has also frequently been described as being the pioneers of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal. The group performed twice as the main acts of the Ozzfest tour.
The band released their first album ‘Metal Magic’ in 1983 produced by Jerry Abbot, the Abbot Brothers’ father. Their second album ‘Projects in the Jungle’ was produced the following year under the same label with only a few changes in the songs melodies. The band underwent a couple of changes in their lead vocalist members before settling for Phil Anselmo. They then released their album ‘Power metal’ which indicated some significant changes in the band’s sound.
After the group signed with Atco records, they finally got a shot at commercial success. Pantera released their album, ‘Cowboys from Hell’ in July 1990 which many individuals referred to as their debut album since their earlier albums were not as successful. The band further went on to produce other successful albums such as ‘Vulgar Display of Power’ and ‘Far beyond Driven’. The latter debuted at number one in Australian and American charts. All three albums later went platinum and the group received a couple of Grammy Nominations for some of the hit singles in these albums.
Tensions in the band would later lead to the disbandment of the group by the Abbot Brothers in 2003 when their lead vocalist Anselmo left with no indications of returning. The brothers then went on to form Damageplan but the group was short lived after Dimebag Darell and other individuals were shot dead by a mentally unstable fan during a concert in Columbus, Ohio.
