Nirvana, an American rock group was formed in 1987 in Aberdeen Washington by Krist Novoselic (bassist) and Kurt Cobain (guitarist and singer). The band which was active from 1987 to 1994 was popular for their rock and grunge music. Their longest serving drummer was Dave Grohl though the group had performed with numerous other drummers during their short music career. Their music was characterized by soft quite verses contrasted by heavy and loud choruses.

The band was quite influential in the grunge music industry and released their first single titled ‘Love Buzz’ in 1998. They then went on to release their debut album ‘Bleach’ with Sub pop records in 1989. This album earned the group a position in the Seattle grunge scene. Nirvana would later sign with DGC records which produced their second album ‘Nevermind’ in 1991. The first single of this album ‘Smells like Teen Spirit’ would then become a great hit that eventually catapulted the group to success.

The group’s third album ‘Utero’ (released in 1993) was also a commercial success but not as much as the previous one. This was probably due to the change in the group’s sound which was less-mainstream in this album. The group finally came to an end after the death of Kurt Cobain in 1994. The media had several times earlier referred to Cobain as the “spokesman of a generation” due to the bands huge success after the release of ‘Nevermind’.  In 1992 Nirvana performed at the MTV VMA’s and went ahead to win awards in the Best New Artist and Best Alternative Video categories.

With over 75 million copies sold worldwide, 25 million in the United States alone, the group definitely left a major impression in the music industry. Posthumous recordings of the group have since been issued out with the process being overseen by Courtney Love – Cobain’s widow-, Grohl and Novoselic.
