The English heavy metal rock band, Motorhead was formed in 1975 in London, England. The band was formed by singer and songwriter Ian Fraser Kilmister (popularly known as Lemmy). Lemmy is the bassist of Motorhead and the only constant member of the group since it was formed. The term ‘Motorhead’ is commonly used in reference to individuals using the drug amphetamine.
Motorhead have severally been considered as one of the initial rock bands of the ‘New Wave of British Heavy Metal’. The band has gained great commercial success worldwide having produced seven live recordings, five compilation albums and 20 studio albums. Sales of their albums are estimated at over 15 million copies worldwide. Motorhead is famous for Heavy metal but they also have other singles in the speed metal and Hard Rock genres. They are also known for their fusion of punk rock into their music so as to create a distinctive style. Their lyrics have touched on popular topics such as war, power, drug abuse and promiscuity.
The band released their first album ‘Motorhead’ in 1977 but started gaining popularity after the release of their second album ‘Overkill’ in 1979. Other albums that brought them great commercial success include ‘Bomber’ (1979), and ‘Ace of Spades’ (1980). Their latest album is ‘The World is Yours’, released in 2010. The group has been performing in tours since then.
The group has also gained huge popularity from the professional wrestling community. Motorhead performed ‘The Game’, Triple H’s popular entrance music. Triple H has been using the song as his entrance music since 2001. Later on when Triple H formed the group ‘Evolution’, Motorhead also performed their entrance music. Evolution’s entrance song was titled ‘Line in The Sand’.
There have been numerous tribute bands formed for the group and Motorhead has gone ahead to acknowledge them on their website. There are also a couple of tribute albums released for the band.
