The American band specializes in the heavy metal genre and is well known for their aggressive music, fast tempos and instrumentals. The band was formed in L.A California in 1981. The group is among the ‘Big Four’ of thrash metal together with Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax. The band came into being when Lars Ulrich, the bands drummer, placed an advertisement in the newspaper looking for other metal musicians who he could jam with. The advertisement was answered by guitarist James Hetfield and Hugh Tanner. Five months later the band was officially formed.

As of 2009 Metallica had sold over 100 million album copies worldwide. This was after the release of their latest studio album ‘Death Magnetic’ in 2008, making them the fourth best selling music artists since the beginning of sales tracking by SoundScan.

The underground music community was among their initial fan base which led to the bands growth.  Their first few albums earned them great critical acclaim with ‘Master of the Puppets’, released in 1986 being described as being among Heavy thrash metal’s most influential album. Their fifth album however gave them the much awaited commercial success by debuting at no.1 on the chart Billboard 200. The album ‘St Anger” was released in 2003 and was quite different from their previous albums. This was followed by a film ‘Some Kind of Monster’ showing the recording of the album.

The band has so far released 4 live albums, twenty five videos, nine studio albums and thirty-seven singles. Metallica has also gone ahead to win 9 Awards in the Grammys. It was also the first band to have 5 albums debut at no.1 on Billboard 200 consequtively. In the Soundscan era the bands album ‘Metallica’ has been ranked as the best selling. That same year Metallica were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
