The English rock band, Led Zeppelin, is one of the most influential heavy metal bands in history. The band was formed in 1968 as ‘The New Yardbirds’. The band comprised of Robert Plant (singer), Jimmy Page (guitarist), John Bonham (drummer) and John Jones (bassist). The group was active from 1968 to 1980 with several reunions by the remaining members of the band since then. Their most famous reunion was in 2007, 27 years after the disbandment of the band which earned them the award of best live act in 2008’s MOJO Awards. The group was initially signed with Atlantic records but later on signed with Swan Song records. Led Zeppelin’s works were in the Hard rock, folk rock, heavy metal and blues rock genres.

The group is famous for releasing all their songs in albums with no song being released as a single. The track ‘Stairway to heaven’ in their fourth album is among some of the most influential rock music songs.

Led Zeppelin’s commercial success has gained them success as one of the best-selling artists in history with estimates placing their sales at between 200 and 300 million copies worldwide.  Six of the group’s albums made it to the number one spot of the US billboard album chart.

The group was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. The group was then awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005 and at the same time four of their works were inducted into the Grammys Hall of Fame. In 2006 it was finally inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame.

Many rock groups have also cited influence from Led Zeppelin among them being major bands such as Queen, Rush and Black Sabbath. The group has been cited to be as successful and influential in the 70s decade just as the Beatles were in the previous decade.
