Kiss, an American rock band was formed in January 1973 in the city of New York. The band rose to fame thereafter in the mid 70s to the late 70s. Their flamboyant costumes and make up made them acquire comic style characters such as The Demon (Simmons), Starchild (Stanley), The Fox (Carr), Spaceman (Frehley) and Catman (Criss). The group usually performed with black and white face paint, crazy outfits and their live performances were characterized by shooting rockets, smoking guitars, and pyrotechnics among many other flamboyant tactics. Their main music Genres are Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Since making it to the music scene they have signed with Casablanca, Mercury, Roadrunner and Kiss records. The band members of the group have included Simmons, Stanley, Frehley, Criss and later on Vinnie Vincent, Eric Carr, Mark St. John, Tommy Thayer, Eric Singer and Bruce Kulick.
Their reunion and comeback in 1996 resulted in the Kiss Alive Reunion Tour which managed to be the highest grossing act between 1996 and 1997. Kiss was nominated for the Rock of Roll Hall of Fame but an announcement in December 2009 eventually confirmed that the group did not make it to the Hall of Fame.
Kiss has however been named in many major top music charts among them; emerging 9th on MTV’s The Greatest Metal Bands, number 1 on Hit Paraders' ‘Top 100 Live Bands’, Number 10 on 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock, 26th on Gibson's ‘50 Greatest American Rock Bands’ and 56th on VH1's ‘100 Greatest Artists Of All Time’ .
The group made their major breakthrough with their first live studio album Alive, which attained the Gold status which was followed by two other hit albums Rock and Roll Over in 1976 and Love Gun on June 30, 1977. The group has continued performing to this day with the current members being Stanley, Simmons, Thayer and Eric.
