Johnny Cash was born on February 26, 1932 in Kingsland Arkansas, USA. He was an American actor, author, singer and song writer. In his early days as an artist Cash was identified with the rock and roll genre though his works span over many other genres such as blues, gospel, folk and country music. Country music was the genre that brought him great commercial success.
Cash’s most famous songs include ‘Man in black’, ‘Folsom Prison blues’, ‘Get Rhythm’ and ‘I walk the line’. Cash is also famous for featuring in the ‘Million Dollar Quartet’ which is a compilation of impromptu recordings he did alongside Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. John cash was enrolled in the United States Air force between July 7, 1950 and July 1954 when he received an honorable discharge as a Staff Sergeant.
Cash had great compassion for prisoners and this led him to perform concerts in Prisons within the United States with his first prison concert held on 1st January 1958. Recordings from these prison concerts were compiled to form some very commercially successful albums. He also featured in numerous films and TV shows including his own TV show, ‘The Johnny Cash Show’.
Cash died on September 12, 2003 slightly less than four months after the death of his wife June Carter Cash. Cash influenced numerous popular music artists from different genres with his works that spanned across many different genres.
Due to his exemplary career in the entertainment industry, Johnny Cash received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 1999. He went on to receive numerous other awards from different organizations. Cash also received the rare opportunity of being inducted in three different halls of Fame i.e. Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1977, County music Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
