John Lennon was born on October 9, 1940 as John Winston Lennon in Liverpool, England. He gained popularity as a singer, songwriter and musician initially receiving huge commercial success as the founder of the famous band, ‘The Beatles’. The Beatles would later receive critical acclaim as one of the most popular bands in popular music history. His main genres of music included Rock, experimental and pop. During his career he played various instruments such as the guitar, keyboard, harmonica and the bass guitar.

John Lennon started his career in the band ‘The Quarrymen’ which later on evolved into the Beatles. Towards the end of the 60s the band began to disband and John Lennon embarked on his solo career. During his career as a musician, he released several successful albums among them, ‘John Lennon/ Plastic Ono Band’ and ‘Imagine’. Two of his greatest hits from these albums were ‘Imagine’ and ‘Give Peace a Chance’. He would later go on to change his name to John Ono Lennon after marrying Yoko Ono in 1969. John Lennon then took a short break from music between 1975 and 1980 to concentrate on  his family affairs.

In 1980, he released his last album Double Fantasy and was unfortunately murdered three weeks after its release. His album sales as of 2012 have been estimated to be over 14 million copies. Rolling Stones further went on to rank him as the 5th greatest singers of all time.  The BBC poll also ranked him 8th on the ‘100 Greatest Britons’ list in 2002.

John Lennon was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1994 and also the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987. John Lennon also gained huge popularity with the people of the United States due to his criticism against the Vietnam War. This political and peace activism led to various attempts to have him deported by the then Nixon government.
