David Bowie was born on 8th January 1947 as David Robert Jones in Brixton, London. Bowie is a man of many talents and has attained success as a musician, actor, singer-songwriter and record producer. In music his main genres include rock, glam rock, pop and art rock though he has experimented in numerous different styles.

David Bowie first gained popularity after the release of his single ‘Space Oddity’ in July 1969 which managed to reach the top five in the UK Singles Chart. His alter-ego character Ziggy Stardust came into being three years later when he released the hit ‘Starman’ and the album ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’.

His commercial success in the US came after the release of his hit single ‘Fame’ together with the album ‘Young Americans’. Other hit albums he released that achieved great success in the 70s were ‘Low’ and the so-called ‘Berlin Trilogy’ albums. Bowie continued to release more successful albums in the 1990s and 2000s and continued to perform and tour until 2004 when he performed his last tour, the ‘Reality Tour’. He is however set to release his latest studio album around March 2013 titled ‘The Next Day’.

With over 140 million copies sold worldwide, Bowie’s albums have been a great success having received numerous platinum and gold certifications both in the US and the UK.

David Bowie was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. His music has influenced numerous artists in many different genres due to his numerous styles of music. Bowie has also received two Grammy Awards and two BRIT Awards for his music and has received numerous awards for his acting too. Bowie won the Saturn Best Actor Award for his performance in the 1976 film ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’.  Bowie has featured in over 25 films in his acting career spanning a period of almost four decades.
