Black Sabbath is an English rock band which was initially formed in 1968 under the name Earth. Earth was a heavy blues rock band but was later renamed to Black Sabbath in 1969 after the members realized that they were regularly being confused with another band with the same name. The group is however now famous for the heavy metal genre and has attained great success in that genre. Black Sabbath was formed by singer Ozzy Osbourne, drummer Bill Ward and bassist Geezer Butler.

Black Sabbath has been associated with horror and occult themes though they have also recorded songs that address social issues such as corruption, dangers of drug abuse and the horrors of war.

Black Sabbath has sold over 70 million copies worldwide with an estimated 15 million in the United States alone. The group has also been cited as the pioneers of the heavy metal genre. MTV have ranked them as the Greatest Metal Band of all time.  The group is also ranked second on VH1s ‘100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock’. In 2005 the band was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame and then into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the following year.

The group has had several lineup changes since its inception. In 1979 Ozzy Osbourne was dismissed from the group due to his indulgence in drug abuse. He however went on to pursue a very successful solo career, selling more than 100 million albums worldwide. Several other artists have recorded and performed with the band. In 1997 the initial members who are officially the current members of Black Sabbath reunited to perform in the Ozzfest festival. The group then released their live album ‘Reunion’ on October 20, 1998.

The group has been in hiatus several times since the reunion as the members continue to pursue their solo careers. However, the group recently announced that they would be releasing their new studio album ‘13’ around June 2013.
